When I was very, VERY young, I watched my brother star as Amahl in this operetta; a young, crippled boy who is greeted by the Three Kings, from the birth of Jesus.
To think I’d be performing in it over a decade later! The Page was among the most unique roles I’ve played. Being constantly present under the main action, then to explode into singing as Amahl’s mother tries to steal the gold. It’s the measure of a performer to be able to remain so constantly switched on, even if you aren’t speaking.
I actually worked with St. Albans Chamber Opera during my teens on Noye’s Fludde. This one ended up being my second paid professional performance ever! What a way to kick off 2025!
